What does it look like to give up hope and hold on to it at the same time? Undoing Crazy presents Carla Sinclair, 46, a dutiful daughter to Eve Sinclair, a loyal friend to Dana Washington and a dedicated teacher at Fredrick Douglass Middle School. Lately, Carla’s grown tired of it all, there’s an emptiness and ache in her heart—she questions whether she should live—or not. Carla believes no one cares what she wants, not her mama, not her best friend, not even the fine brother she meets at the Lucky Lounge. Only a young audacious spoken word performer named Queen has the ability to truly see Carla and her troubles. Set in the bed of political activism known as Oakland, California, Undoing Crazy is full of culture and truths learned from unexpected places.

This book had an integrating title and I was intrigued because I see so few books recommended that deal directly with the primary issues in the black community that are avoided like a plague. We do not discuss mental illness. Racism in education. Our history as a family. This book takes on all three and makes me smile, cry, frown, laugh, sit up straight and fall back in my chair. All in the same chapter.

This book is inspirational and grounding. I feel like there's so many things I learned about myself by reading about Cas, Dana, David, and all the people they know. Please. Read this book.

Undoing Crazy Colette D Winlock 9780615807928 Books Reviews

I was surprised at how much I loved this book! I live in the Bay Area and was drawn by how well Colette Winlock described the places I'd frequented or had heard of, but I was even more drawn to Carla Sinclair. This character really resonated. She was art imitating life and I could not wait to see how her life would turn out. I know her as well as I know myself, our lives seem to parallel as Winlock unravels, undresses, and unwittingly weaves a story about a Black woman dealing with depression. We certainly need more stories like this in literature.
I often find myself wanting to continue a conversation with one of the characters in "Undoing Crazy." Or wondering how Mamma or Carla is doing today. That is the sign to me of a well written novel with great characters.

But that's not all. I get a glimpse into the way life unfolds--toward crazy then in the undoing of crazy/ journey toward transformation. I get a glimpse into the life of a family that is in many ways unlike my own--and my world widens. I see places of connection beneath the difference. I want to dive into my own "emotional inheritance" after reading that explored on the pages of this book.

I've read it twice so far, but I'll read "Undoing Crazy" again and again.
Wow!
I really liked this book. The characters and setting were so clear to me as the reader. I think a lot of people can relate to the dynamics of relationships that affect us all; family, career, and friends.
The ending was predictable.....however I still enjoyed the book overall. Hope there is a part two...would like to know how these characters develop.
Undoing Crazy compellingly chronicles 46-year-old Carla Sinclair's struggle to handle her roles and responsibilities through the haze of depression--as a burnt-out, but still fiercely dedicated teacher in an urban school district, as the not-quite-grown up daughter of the strong-willed and ailing mother she visits regularly, and as the best friend of a self-absorbed psychologist/professor who can't see behind Carla's mask. While the story deals with serious issues, Carla's wit and offbeat sense of humor lighten the drama. Through Carla's story, Undoing Crazy tells you at least three things you might not know

(1) A lot of us think we know our parents' stories, but we don't. Learning the story of their lives-from them, through their eyes, as opposed to seeing it only through your eyes as a child--can expand your understanding both of what was and what is. But getting to them to tell you their story, the real one, is a delicate task. The author deftly draws you into the parallel universe of the tale of Carla's mother and father.

(2) Lots of people who struggle with mental health issues look pretty good on the outside. Like many, Carla manages to get up and go to work each day even as she questions whether she'll make it through another weekend. At the end of each, Courvoisier bottles litter her trash.

(3) Carla's life experience as an African American and that of others in the story shows how the continuing effects of racism (and colorism) can affect the mental health of African Americans in specific ways. The story connects what black folks experienced in Depression-era Texas to what they experienced after they migrated to the Oakland of Carla's youth, as well as to what Carla experiences as a teacher in the present.

With sharp insight and an eye for detail, the author has woven an intriguing story about loss and unresolved grief and what it looks like to try to save another as we work to save ourselves.
Undoing Crazy was a book that made me want to curl up with a blanket on the couch and not put it down until I found out what happened next. The title was true to form. Carla, the main character was really trying to undo the maze of her life which turned out to be real life situations that so many of us -- especially African American middle aged women can relate to. Men should also read the book because Collette Winlock beautifully weaves the black male voice throughout the book and makes sure he is heard as well.
I'm going to give away several copies as gifts and may well hold a discussion group about it. Great job, Ms. Winlock! Keep writing and representing Oaktown well.

I VERY slowly read this book as it is very "meaty"...... full of interesting insights, and concepts I wanted to carefully consider. Great cover, first of all. Love the look and the painting by Jeanette Madden of the Woman with the Burgundy Background. LOVE that this story references a lot of Oakland highlights and local spots. OUR precious Lake Merritt has a great role.

I do not want to spoil the end for readers, but this book is quite inspirational and the writer, Colette Winlock, has a lot to say. No frothy African American, entertaining new novel here!!!! The main Character, Carla, is going through a lot in isolation, in the midst of many people in her daily life. But she is very good at covering up what she is really going through and looking good on the surface.

Love the way her community rallies to support her to change things in her life that are not working. I am VERY happy I read this book and that even though I was reading 2 others at the same time, I kept going back to this one the most.
